Blood and Roses

(why you can’t beat lesbian vampires)

For this Valentine’s Day, a group of Eternal Press authors with all levels of romance come together to discuss who the best lovers in fiction are. This means that all of a sudden I, whose characters have mostly been human women dealing with human love interests and adversaries, am in the company of werewolves, shape-shifters and vampires…Wait a minute. Vampires. The idea draws forth the image of women in sexy Goth attire. I’ve been wondering if they do sparkle. That’s beside the point, anyway, because none of us has ever met one for real, to verify or falsify that theory. Here we go. Even though I’m a little out of my depths with this supernatural valentine, I can do something with vampires. I keep it human all year, so at this party with my fantastic fellow authors, I’d like to hold my own. I should have to warn you, too, because I believe when it comes to them (the vampires, not my fellow authors) we are allowed to make stuff up.

Cecily did something completely unexpected. She reached out to touch Leila’s face with a cool hand and then leaned in to kiss her. Leila learned that there was an advantage to vampire-old-age, because with it came experience. She was melting into the kiss, her worries dissolving into nothing. She couldn’t wait to get the biting business out of the way and get down to it. She was beginning to understand why this was supposed to be so good. Cecily’s kind had had a lot of time to practice sex.

Come on, imagine that, the skills a person could learn over the span of a few hundred years--and the insights they’d have on society, politics, history…vampires could be fun to hang out with for a multitude of reasons. I’m also sure they really love red. They’d love Valentine’s, right? There’s something we have to get straight, though, pardon the pun. Valentine’s Day with a bite could be awesome, but not so much of it kills the human--that would really take the fun out of it. Does it turn the human into a vampire (how would I know)? Well, it doesn’t in my universe, just adds shades of red.

Why lesbians, you ask? That’s a given in my writing--I’m just expanding my horizons with the paranormal. Mix archetypes and images, and you have two women (one of them potentially with sharp teeth) in a sexy romantic tangle. Imagine.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Special Spontaneous Giveaway, UK only

I love it when good things happen to good people--it never fails to make me teary-eyed. Yesterday came with such a moment when I learned about the historical vote that took place in Great Britain, taking equal marriage rights to the next step.

In order to spread some more happiness, I decided to do a little giveaway for friends and fans, this time UK only (but don't worry if you live elsewhere, Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and there'll be another, world-wide giveaway). Until Sunday, noon (EST), write me a note at barbarawinkes[at]hotmail[dot]com and let me know why you should win a free PDF (or epub) copy of Winter Storm.

I'll choose the winner randomly after the giveaway ends.

Good luck!

Picture credits go to my BFF and wedding photographer Stefanie Oepen.

In the meantime, you can find both Autumn Leaves and Winter Storm here at Eternal Press, or the Amazon store of your choice.

The Journey so far…and a look ahead.

It’s been a little over a week since the release day of Autumn Leaves as e-book, with the paperback coming out in a matter of weeks - published, the magic word.

What would you associate with it?

There are as many stories out there as there are books. I remember watching “Can’t Think Straight”, where one of the characters who has always been passionate about her writing, gets published in the end. It’s one of the cutest lesbian-themed movies out there, but you can’t help thinking--it doesn’t work that way, with the book anyway. Somewhere along the way, you’ve heard stories about how it isn’t all that romantic. You heard about best-selling authors, and the long road and many rejections. Recently, you probably heard the story of the novel based on Twilight fanfiction going all the way.

Whatever the story is, it is a dream come true. It doesn’t happen overnight, it takes work, luck and the right timing and people who make it possible--long before you dare to hit “send” on your manuscript submission. When all of it comes together, it’s only the beginning of the journey. That’s all right with me, it’s been an awesome road trip so far.

Want to share part of that road with me?

There are two giveaways coming up for a free pdf copy of Autumn Leaves, one as part of the Holiday Hootenanny on the Women and Words blog, and the other one I’m planning on Goodreads, announcement for that to come soon.

If you have already read Autumn Leaves, I hope you enjoyed the journey of Callie and Rebecca. I have some more good news, but that’s a story for another day.
